Le Mans: PROJECT 1 to run an art car...

Motorsport fans can look forward to a particular highlight at this year’s edition of the Le Mans 24 Hours: Project 1 will be competing at the endurance classic, which is also the FIA WEC season’s finale, with a unique design by the artist Richard Phillips, specially created for the occasion.

Further to our Le Mans livery article, Project 1 have trumped the pack with their art car.

“Art Cars have a long history in Le Mans and this stunning design continues the story”, says team manager Axel Funke. “Our first season in the World Endurance Championship has been a special one for all of us and we’re all the more excited about presenting our fans and partners with another highlight for the most important race of the year.”

Artist behind the design is Richard Phillips. “This is a great chance to display my art in a completely new way”, the American commented. “I decided to combine three works for this Le Mans design. That’s a new aspect and shows how everything in terms of car design can be transposed and put into practice. I’m very proud of the result and hope to provide fans with a lot of pleasure.”

The Project 1 Art Car was created in cooperation with Porsche Digital, whose product “Second Skin” has set new standards in car design and vehicle wrapping. In collaboration with Style Porsche, Studio F.A. Porsche and external partners such as Andy Blackmore and Richard Phillips, new, unique designs are created. In future, Porsche customers will be able to individualize their cars and relate not only to motorsport classics but also on designs inspired by fashion and art: “This project aims to show what car design is capable of and that Second Skin fantasy knows no bounds”, said Simon Weiss, Second Skin co-designer from Porsche Digital.

Focus on the Project 1 Porsche 911 RSR at the world’s most famous endurance race will be important for another reason: Egidio Perfetti, Patrick Lindsey and Jörg Bergmeister rank first in the GTE Am class standings and shortly before the FIA WEC finale, the trio’s 23-point lead makes it one of the clear favourites for winning the trophy.

The 87th edition of the Le Mans 24 Hours begins on 15th June. Eurosport will be reporting extensively on the action both on and off the race track.
