Many years ago I used to work in the Paddock Office at Brands Hatch signing the drivers on. Being quite young at the time, and in a male dominated environment, I quite enjoyed this…some of the guys were very easy on the eye!
A particular favourite of mine was a young, dark, handsome chap called Paul Warwick (younger brother to the then Formula One driver Derek). Always very polite, with a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye, Paul was a great talent destined to go on to big things. So when the news came through one Sunday in July of his tragic death I was devastated.
Nigel Mansell, impressed by Paul's performance, signed him to the Mansell Madgwick Motorsport team as their lead driver for the 1991 British F3000 Championship. Paul had a perfect start to the season, with four wins from four starts.
On the afternoon of Sunday 21st July 1991, whilst leading the fifth round at Oulton Park, Paul’s car suffered a front suspension failure causing him to leave the track at Knickerbrook at some 140mph. Having never regained consciousness, Paul died from his injuries in hospital. Paul was awarded the race win posthumously.
No one could rival Pauls' five wins throughout the remainder of the season, and the young man from Hampshire was awarded the Championship.
